Breast cancer month

THABAZIMBI – CANSA Thabazimbi is planning two projects for breast cancer month, October, which will take place on the first and last Wednesday of October.
On Wednesday 1 October four experienced CANSA nursing sisters will visit Thabazimbi. Pap smears and breast examinations will be done at Cradlekind in Eland Street at R85 per examination and at the Regorogile Clinic. The price per examination is much cheaper than normal rates thanks to CANSA subsidising the project.
It is important that women adopt a habit of examining their own breasts once a month, a week after menstruation, a CANSA pamphlet on breast cancer advises. Women must be on the lookout for unusual swellings, lumps, discharges or itchiness which could be early signs of cancer. From the age of 40 women should have a mammogram done annually if they can afford it.
Sexually active women should have pap smears done every 2 – 3 years. The Department of Health offers 3 free pap smears with 10 year intervals. Pap smears aid in tracing abnormal cells typical of cervical cancer.
Bookings for the examinations at Cradlekind can be made by phoning Lize Momberg asap at 082 520 8455 of 084 506 8195.
An evening funrun (5 or 10 km) is being planned by CANSA for 29 October. More details regarding this will follow soon.
CANSA urges the people of Thabazimbi to get involved during Breast Cancer Month and reminds them that through early detection cancer CAN be beaten.
