THABAZIMBI – One of the most pressing challenges facing the Thabazimbi Municipality is the establishment of a proper sewage farm instead of the glorified “bucket system” in Northam, Thabazimbi mayor Lucas Matlou, said in his welcoming speech at the workshop on development at Komma Nader last week. Currently Northam’s sewage works consists of oxidation dams and Thabazimbi’s sewage farm regularly overflows into the nearby Rooikuilspruit. According to the mayor, there are squatter camps such as Raputi and Jabulani that have virtually no infrastructure to speak of. He referred to the fact that all stakeholders were not represented at the workshop and that he therefore did not feel pressed to accept any suggestions or recommendations flowing from the discussions. He also complained that there was not proper demographical representation, but did not specify exactly who these unrepresented stakeholders were. Matlou also suggested that all possible spin-offs must be derived from the 2010 World Cup activities and spoke about the creation of fan parks with big screen TV’s at big centres such as Thaba Park. The need to identify areas or setting aside a section of all new residential developments for middle income housing, was also raised by the mayor. He also suggested that game farms in the vicinity must respond to the thrust in the economy by securing food for locals. Other problems he referred to were “blockages” in getting projects going which needed approval from government authorities other than that of the municipality.
