Police search for 14 escaped prisoners in Limpopo

JOHANNESBURG – Fourteen awaiting trial prisoners have escaped from police holding cells in Modimolle, Limpopo, police said on Wednesday.

“The suspects escaped after sawing through the mesh wire of the exercise room on Tuesday. As some of the suspects can be considered armed and dangerous, members of the public are advised not to confront them but contact the nearest police station,” said police spokeswoman, Colonel Ronel Otto.

The prisoners had been arrested for various crimes including burglary, armed robbery and one for rape.

Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Fanie Masemola, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

“The incident is viewed in a very serious light. Should our investigation expose any negligence or involvement by our members, there will be no hesitation in taking harsh disciplinary measures, including dismissal from the SAPS,” Masemola said.
