Women in the front line at Amandelbult.

By Elias Malindi

Amandelbult’s mission of employing women in the mine has continued. In its mission of employing women, Amandelbult appointed four women who are working as loco driver’s at number 2 shaft, level 10. These women are Noriah Chavalala, Lerato Segwe, Boitumelo Molebatse and Olivia Formene. They underwent the normal training, and qualified like any other employee. They say they are not scared of working with men and ready to work in any shaft, as long as they do what they were trained for.
Their male counterparts have welcomed the move of having women as colleagues underground. Lerato Segwe said “I feel confident about my job and is not scared of anything. My first experience underground was very exiting. If you want to do something and you are determind nothing will stop you. Mr Eric Ndbambi their immediate supervisor said “What I like about them, is that they are time conscious, arrive on time, eager and willing to learn and never come to work under the influence of alcohol”.
Mr Tom van der Nest, number 2 shaft business area manager, said “Facilities are still developed, but are not yet up to standard. At the moment there are caravans change houses which are built on temporarily basis to cater for women. Management has kept a very watchful and sharp eye on the conditions of women in the company”. Ladies forums are being established on all different shafts at Amandelbult. These forums are going to act as a communication channel betweem women and management.
