Thabazimbi owes Eskom R54 million

THABAZIMBI – In an urgent media release given to Kwêvoël the DA stated that the Thabazimbi Municipality Mayor, Patricia Mosito must urgently take action against the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for failing to ensure that the Eskom account is being paid on a monthly basis.
The municipality is owing Eskom more than R54 million at this moment. It’s clear that the municipality has been failing to pay the account for more than a year.
Failure to pay on time might lead to Eskom switching off electricity in some areas within the municipality which will have economical and social effects.
Surprisingly, this happens despite the huge service delivery backlog that includes water, RDP houses, electricity, proper sanitation and roads. It’s clear that the local municipality’s financial affairs are in shambles.
If the municipality opted not to pay the Eskom account but to accelerate services, it could have been better.
The DA demands from the Mayor to suspend the CFO with immediate effect and be held accountable. The CFO must pay this account with his own money.
The DA spokesman on this matter, Councillor Bertie Joubert urged the Cooperative Governance MEC, Mr Ishmael Kgejepe to establish a task team to probe this issue.
