Volunteers help out at hospital

Home Based Carers from Thabang in Smash Block have been helping out at the Thabazimbi Hospital during the nation wide strike of government employees. They are transported to the hospital three times a week.

THABAZIMBI – While the strike of government employees is going into its fourth week, trained Home Based Carers of several local NGO’s (non-government organizations) are helping out at the Thabazimbi Hospital.

Home Based Carers of Thabang in Smash Block has been helping out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Other organizations involved in the volunteer work are Bopanang Community Based Organization, Thabazimbi Home Based Carers and Sivukile Educational Trust.

According to the volunteers they have been helping out with medicine administration, taking of blood pressure and cleaning, feeding and changing of patients. Some are helping out in the pharmacy, some at reception, and other are working in the maternity or general wards.

Very little information could be obtained from the hospital management, as to the extent in which the functioning of the hospital was affected by the strike and whether any intimidation has taken place.
