The DA has met with Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha to discuss the shocking audit comes announced by the Auditor General last week.
Top of the discussion was the point raised by the Auditor-General on the lack of effective leadership to steer our local structures of government in the right direction. The premier gave the assurances that this matter is receiving urgent attention.
The DA informed the Premier that as soon as the Legislature resumes, the DA will table a motion for debate in order for the House to consider the disastrous impact that cadre deployment has had on service delivery, specifically on the poor.
The A-G’s report singled out only Waterberg District Municipality, as the only municipality which managed to keep a clean audit from the previous year. The DA commends the leadership of this municipality.
For the rest of the other municipalities, the AG’s results are scathing said me Desiree van der Walt, DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Local Government pointing out that a concerning feature in this report was that number of municipalities have regressed from qualified audits to disclaimers in the year under review. These are Mopani, Vhembe, Blouberg, Greater Tzaneen, Mutale, Polokwane, and Thabazimbi, where Thabazimbi rates amongs the top five losers.
This is also made worse by a number of disclaimers also increasing. Disclaimers went up from 8 to 14 municipalities.
Fetakgomo Municipality which received a clean audit in 2009-10 and 2010-11 regressed to a qualified opinion now.
The overall unauthorised expenditure increased up to R 733 million, an increase of R146 million in the previous financial year.
Municipalities are at the coalface of service delivery to the people of Limpopo. It is clear that much still needs to be improved at this sphere of government in the province.
