Chase and touch leads to drowning

THABAZIMBI – An 18 year boy, Junior Papi Sarantjie, a learner from Mabogopedi Secondary School, drowned while playing at the swimming pool next to the old Bioscope hall in Thabazimbi.
The incident happened on Friday 16 January 2015 at about 14:00. The swimming pool, owned by Kumba Thabazimbi Mine, is leased out and managed privately as a recreation facility. As far as it could be established, this was the first incident of this kind at this particular pool, which has been part of the Iscor Recreational Club since the early 1940’s.
According to witnesses, the deceased and his friends were playing a chase and touch game around the pool area when he slipped and fell into the water. Apparently he could not swim and attempts to rescue him by his peers failed. Efforts were taken to resuscitate him after he was retrieved from the water, but were unsuccessful.
The emergency personnel were contacted and certified him dead at the scene. An inquest docket was opened by the Thabazimbi Police and a full investigation is underway to establish the cause of the incident to ensure proper preventative actions in future. No arrests have been made.
