Youth Firearm Safety Program held at Neos

KOEDOESKOP – On Friday 27 November, the Action Shooting Association held a Shotgun-Fun day at Neos Christian School Koedoeskop. This forms part of a ‘Youth Firearm Safety Program’ aimed at the youth, creating awareness as to their role and responsibilities pertaining to firearms.
As firearms enthusiasts we try to convey the message that responsibility for safety begins ‘me’. Under safe guidance, the youngsters were taken through the theory and practice of responsible firearms handling, in a fun environment. The program focus is to enable the participants an experience where the environment and activities are set enforcing safety, hoping that they will follow the example of the mentoring in future.
The enthusiasm of the students overwhelmed the team. Days prior to the event a workbook formulated from the standard competency for shotgun was given to the students. The book was set-up on a level for the high-school learner. It covered safety, correct handling of a firearm as well as a description and explanation as to the parts and function of a shotgun, and it’s ammunition. It also delved into the law and what they should do under pear pressure if they find themselves in an unsupervised situation where firearms are involved.
The students excelled in the theory with no learner achieving fewer than 80%. They were initially taken through the safe handling of a shotgun using ‘dummy’ rounds. Once the group all showed an understanding as to the safe handling and operation, they were taken through the practical of shooting with live ammunition. We were overwhelmed by their eagerness to display what they learned.
Today we feel proud in saying that we are confident that there are now 19 new young ambassadors as to safety and responsibility regarding firearms. Johan de Beer, the president and the participating team of the Action Shooting Association wishes to thank the staff and pupils of Neos Christian School Koedoeskop for their wonderful hospitality.
The day was made possible thanks to a school with a team of open hearted, dedicated teachers and scholars. We wish to congratulate the scholars who really impressed us with their outstanding discipline and sense of responsibility as well as their friendly, helpful attitude. You can certainly be proud of yourselves.
We want to thank Neos, and the sponsors of the day Buco, Poviserve Construction, Amara Taxidermy, The Gunmen and our dedicated team of the Action Shooting Association and the helpers for making the day a success.
