NORTHAM – The Mayor of Thabazimbi Local Municipality, Cllr Patricia Mosito lead a team of Municipal officials and councillors on a campaign: Back to Basics. The meeting and briefing was held at Northam Lapa on 25 September 2014. This is in line with what was resolved during the second presidential local government summit (PLGS) promised action in transforming the performance of municipalities from mediocre, in many cases, to excellent, and ensuring that efficient municipalities remain that way.
“The aim of this campaign is to make sure that all basic services are attended to as per the mandate of local government. The Mayor highlighted to officials the followings:
* Putting people first and engaging with communities
* Delivering basic services
* Good governance
* Sound financial management
Mayor Mosito noted that the country’s Constitution enshrines certain fundamental socio-economic rights, such as the rights to dignity, water, sanitation, roads and housing, amongst others. “Our motto should be – no service failures,” she said, “and where there is one, we must restore services urgently.”
The key for all of this work is that communities must be satisfied that local government is doing all it can to satisfy their needs – which would potentially cut down on service delivery protests.
The team then moved around the Northam residential area and town to check on all basic services needs that need urgent attention. The issue of potholes, road marking, non-visible speed humps, road signs, non functioning of some street lights, shortage of water in other parts of the town, illegal dumping and non maintenance of landfill site will be attended urgently.
The team will soon visit all satellites and municipal areas to compile all basic services needs and give them urgent and necessary attention.
