The DA in Limpopo announced on Wednesday that it would approach the Co-operative Governance and Human Settlements MEC, Ishmael Kgetjepe, to declare Lephalale and numerous other municipalities affected by floods disaster areas.
Municipalities such as Lephalale, Bela Bela, Lepelle Nkumpi and Thumalela in Vhembe have been badly affected by floods. Bridges and roads were washed away. Many children are not able to go to school, DA provincial leader, Jacques Smalle said in the statement.
“Declaring these regions as disaster areas will free up funds necessary for disaster management and reconstruction. These municipalities do not have funds to repair all the roads and bridges being destroyed by the floods. MEC Kgetjepe must liaise with the Minister, Lechesa Tsenogi, to initiate the process to improve disaster relief,” Smalle added.
The DA also urged the MEC to establish a task team that will be able to assess the damage and come up with tangible solutions within 14 days.
