Thabang out of the woods

THABAZIMBI – The future of children in the care of Thabang Children’s Project is stable again, following a management crisis in October, after a year of serious financial difficulty, mainly due to lack of funds.

Thabang, which is in its 10th year of operation, experienced a period of heavy turbulence and uncertainty during the last months. During the past weeks the direct control of the project has been handed over to the Board of Trustees, under the leadership of Harold Braack. A process of restructuring has been embarked upon and completed, the project thoroughly reviewed by the Board and the financial viability looked into.

As an interim arrangement, Thabang is being managed voluntarily by Board members, Braack explained. This will be the case until certain vital posts have been filled, hopefully during January or February next year.

In the meantime it is business as usual and arrangements are being made for Christmas functions in SmashBlock and at the Thabang centres. Braack appealed to businesses and organisations to keep supporting Thabang as they have done in the past.

Local long standing trustees of Thabang include Gerrie Raubenheimer (chairman), Carel Jordaan and Pam Trollope. Nominated trustees are Onkgopotse Gaitate, Harold Braack, Tessa White and Hennie Pauw.

To some of the children there, Thabang has been the only home they know. Without financial support they would be left destitute.
