Municipality caught in the act
NORTHAM – Thabazimbi Local Municipality claimed last week that they are not to blame for the illegal dumping next to Northam’s landfill site, but in the early hours of Sunday morning, photographs of their truck dumping garbage next to the site, was taken by a community member.
“The municipality is in control of the dumping site, so they should ensure that it is not set alight, but the fences are dilapidated, and there are people sifting through the rubble to salvage goods which the municipality has allowed. This is a serious violation of the Environmental Act,” the photographer said to Kwêvoël.
“They need to be reprimanded as they have had enough time to have made alternate arrangements.”
Northam doesn’t have a management team to take care of the needs of the town. No one takes responsibility for the state of disrepair in which Northam is currently. “Just look at the state of roads, sport facilities, street lights and the sewerage system that has come to a standstill, but the Mayor comes to Northam to open phase three of the Mall, why does she not take a drive around Northam to take some credit for the conditions?”
