The Deputy Minister for Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mr Lechesa Tsenoli, officiated at the handover of Colchester farm to Motlhabatse community on 15 June 2012.
“This is the beginning of a new life for claimants and we are here to witness and celebrate victory against the forced removal of our people from their land. This community is now back in their ancestors land. Former President Dr Nelson Mandela was right to say no one will loose the rights to his land and fail to claim it back “said Tsenoli.
Waterberg District Mayor Cllr Rosina Mogotlane, Thabazimbi Municipality Mayor Patricia Mosito, Speaker of Thabazimbi, councillors, stakeholders, claimants and officials from both the Thabazimbi Municipality and department of Rural Development and Land Reform and other dignitaries, also attended the event.
This occasion marks not only the physical return of the land, but also the restoration of the identity and heritage of the Motlhabatse community. I am happy to be part of this historic moment as you receive the hand over certificate for your land “said Mayor Mosito” in her welcome address.
She further congratulated the Motlhabatse community for getting their land back and made an appeal to all relevant departments to provide the necessary assistance to ensure that the farm is workable and productive.
The land restored to the claimants is Remaining Extent, Portion 1 and Portion 2 of the Farm Colchester 17 KQ, with a combined 2271.3743 in extent, which amounted to R17, 000, 000.00. The land is restored to 77 households with 15 women headed households.
