POLOKWANE – The Democratic Alliance, last week Wednesday, won Ward 20 during the by-elections in Polokwane. “This victory now shows beyond a shadow of doubt that the electoral support of the DA is growing and that of the ruling party is dwindling” says Desiree van der Walt, DA Provincial Leader for Limpopo. This was previously a safe seat for the ANC.
These results augur well for well for the two years leading up to the 2014 national election, our share of the vote in this Ward grew from 31.19% in 2009, to 41.07% in 2011 and to 62.87% in last week’s elections in Polokwane.
In a period of 4 months, the DA won 2 Wards off from the ANC, one was last year in Mogalakwena and the most recent one in Polokwane. Overall in the Province, this is the eighth ward won by the DA since the 2011 Local Government Elections. The DA took 2 Wards from the FF +, in Mookgopong and Modimolle respectively. This was also as they cemented their victories, taking Wards from the ANC, in Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit, Tzaneen and Makhado.
Van der Walt said in conclusion that the DA continues to grow their support in all communities, and specifically among South Africans that have not previously voted for the DA.
