Stabbing at high school beauty contest

THABAZIMBI – What was supposed to be a happy event turned into a nightmare when a Matric learner of Mabogopedi High School was stabbed with a knife on Friday 14 October at the Regorogile Community Hall while the school was hosting a beauty contest.

The injured male student was taken to hospital and referred to Polokwane Provincial Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

According to bystanders the incident occurred when the learner and one of the teachers embarked on a verbal confrontation regarding a girl friend. The teacher was supported by another teacher and an off-duty police officer, a member of the Thabazimbi Police Station.

The confrontation turned violent when a knife was pulled out and a fire arm was brandished. The learner was stabbed in the stomach.

The police official and one teacher were taken into custody and charged with Assault with the Intent to inflict Grievous Bodily Harm. Both appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrate Court on Monday, 17 October, and released on bail. The case was postponed until 2 November. The second teacher fled, but was apprehended on Monday.

According to the Police, the police official was suspended during his detainment, but the suspension was lifted as soon he was released on bail. An internal police investigation is currently being conducted into the conduct of the official, which runs separately from the criminal investigation.
