THABAZIMBI – Kumba Iron Ore, Thabazimbi Mine celebrated the annual SHE Day on Monday 3 October at the Ntswe Tshipi Sports Grounds in Ipelegeng.
The aim of the event was to remember all workers who have lost their lives while performing their duties in the mine and also to raise awareness on Safety, Health and Environmental on the mine.
The event started off with mr Alfred Mathenjwa, Manager of the Beneficiation Plant, laying a wreath and unveiling the memorial stone to pay tribute to the workers who lost their lives on the mine. Every time the memorial stone is unveiled, it is with great sadness to remember colleagues and even more so friends and family members that passed on. This act is also to strengthen Kumba’s efforts in ensuring that there will be no repeat of fatalities on the mine.
The acting General Manager, mr Sabelo Gumede, emphasised the importance of the event, not only to remember heroes but also to continue their resolve of Zero Harm. Mr Peter Belly, the Chairperson of Health and Safety for NUM, added his voice to the call by encouraging management and employees to share the responsibility of safety. Mr Lee McMaster, Chairperson of Health and Safety for Solidarity also echoed the same message to employees.
The duration of the event was filled with performances from Barcode and Gumboot Dancers, sporting activities namely netball, mini soccer and touch rugby, as well as kids’ activities which included rock climbing, mechanical bull, face painting, potato sack race and many more.
