TBZ Municipality – 3rd Greenest in Waterberg

THABAZIMBI – The Thabazimbi Municipality won third place in the Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) in Waterberg District for 2011. Six Municipalities competed in the competition.

The competition is an environmental programme with a broad focus on sustainable development. This competition succeeds the previous competition known as the Cleanest Town Competition (CTC).

The competition is judged on the following criteria: Waste Management, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Water Management and Conservation, Landscaping, Tree Planting and Beautification, Public Participation and Community Empowerment and Leadership and Institutional Arrangement.

The Greenest Municipality Competition is run under the auspices of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism. The department established an independent panel of evaluators comprising of experienced officials from sector departments and NGO’s.

The departments serving on the panel of judges are as follows: Department of Water Affairs, Department of Local Government and Housing, Environment Non Government Organisations and National Department of Environmental Affairs.

Ms. PG Rasesepa, Manager Social Services said, “the GMC is not just a mere competition but one that is linked to the municipality’s key performance areas and I urge other municipalities to participate in the programme. We also made an appeal to all residents of Thabazimbi Municipality to obey by the rule and stop all illegal dumping that is happening all over own town and settlements.”

As the winners of the GMC competition in the Waterberg District, Thabazimbi Municipality received an amount of R 10 000 and a trophy.
