Illegal cigarettes confiscated near Thabazimbi

THABAZIMBI – During the early hours of Sunday morning 24 July, at about 02:00 police officials from SAPS Thabazimbi were doing normal patrols on the R510 Lephalale Road.

They noticed a Red Chrysler parked on the side of the road. Upon approaching the vehicle they found two occupants who claimed that they were waiting for the driver who is also the owner of the vehicle. Apparently the driver went to ask for help as the vehicle had a mechanical problem.

The Police then searched the occupants as well as the vehicle. The SAPS found that the vehicle was located with various illegally imported cigarettes. Two suspects were arrested for Possession of illegally imported cigarettes. The vehicle was confiscated and towed to SAPS Thabazimbi. The alleged owner of the vehicle is still at large. The estimated street value of the cigarettes are ± R24 000.

The suspects appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on 25 July 2011 and the case was postponed to Monday, 1 August 2011.
