LEEUPOORT – Tshepong Children’s Project is a NGO in the Koedoeskop area which runs various programs, like home-base care, after-school, awareness workshops etc; and is also connected to the Tshepong Clinic, which is managed by the Department of Health.
Tshepong’s staff decided to participate in the “Mandela Day – 67 Minutes of Good-will” by running a soup kitchen at Raphuthi’ a settlement opposite Leeupoort Vakansie Dorp. The organization’s home-based carers are working extensively in the area and Tshepong is also running the local crèche in the settlement. Through their work the staff was aware of desperate poverty in the community and decided that an extra meal on this very special day should be very welcome. And indeed, once the word had spread, about 80 people arrived and happily received a bowl of hot chicken and veggie soup on this cold winter morning.
The day was a great success. They identified the need for a repeat in the not too distant future.
