Make every day a Mandela Day

THABAZIMBI – Mandela Day, celebrated every year on Nelson Mandela’s birthday 18 July, followed after the success of his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in June 2008.

The Mandela Day message for 2011 is centred around “change”. It is a call to action for people everywhere to take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time, just as Madiba did.

Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life serving his community, the country and the world at large in the struggle for peace and equality. To celebrate his life and values he embraces, International Mandela Day was launched in 2009.

“It encourages people to do something good, no matter how big or small for 67 minutes on this day,” said Mayor Mosito of Thabazimbi. The Mayor further highlighted ways to give 67 minutes of services such as to read for someone who can’t read, offer to look after the children of a single mother to give her break or take the children on an outing or visit someone in hospital. These are but some of the things that were highlighted by the Mayor to the community, as some services that can be done to celebrated the life of an icon and former statesman.

In addition to Mandela Day, Mandela Mondays was started on 1 June 2011 to encourage people to make time in their schedules to do good deeds every day, even if it is just for a few minutes.

Thabazimbi Municipality councillors and officials jointly with Marakele SanParks, Kumba Iron Ore mine, IEC and members of the community celebrated the Mandela Day by combating soil erosion along Shai Drive and distributing blankets to the less fortunate at Botha informal settlement and Apiesdoorn respectively. The blankets were donated by Kumba Iron Ore mine.

Mayor Patricia Mosito thanked Kumba Iron Ore mine for their good gesture by helping the needy. Blankets were also distributed to the orphans and elderly people at Apiesdoorn.

On behalf of Thabazimbi Local Municipality, stakeholders and community at large we like to wish a Happy Birthday to our former President, dr Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela. We further wish him good health and many more years. Happy 93rd birthday, Tata Madiba.
