Agriculture Department makes technological breakthrough

The Department of Agriculture has entered 2011 with a bang and has truly sped up on the information highway by making itself accessible on Facebook. The department’s page, found under Limpopo Farmers e-agriculture initiative, is a place where farmers from all over the province can communicate, share ideas and get information from the department.

On doing a quick search on Facebook for similar initiatives, it seems that Agriculture Spokesperson, Mr Kenny Mathivha’s statement that this is the first initiative of its kind in Limpopo rings true.

Although this page is still brand-new, people have already started logging in and interacting with the department and its leadership and also discuss issues amongst themselves.

The Facebook page was created as part of the department’s e-Agriculture initiative started a year ago. The initiative makes sure extension advisory officials interact with farmers using advanced technology throughout the province. “In this age of technology, we are looking beyond our being rural, and thus our slogan, ‘From farming to Agricultural Industrial Development,’” Agriculture MEC, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba said.

One of the first people to log in, Mr Mogale Moleke from Sekhukhune wrote requesting more information about the Food Park Summit that took place recently. He was promptly responded to, Mathivha said.

The Facebook page can also be accessed via a link on the department’s website at

Perhaps other departments will now follow in Agriculture’s footsteps and ensure true transparency and communication between them and those they serve. LiN News/Polokwane Observer
