THABAZIMBI – Thaba Trans was the host for the second of the Waterberg District Driver of the Year competition (DOTY) which was held on held on Sunday 19, September 2010.
Nerves ran high as competitors displayed heightened sense of urgency in order to complete the assigned tasks within the time limits. The instructors were particularly happy with this especially as minimal drops in standards were experienced to ensure that time frame was met.
The main purpose was said not to be about competing but to enhance driving skills and also to share skills amongst participants as they were coming from various organizations and institutions. All participants were encouraged to go and share their experience with their colleagues that were not in attendance when they go back to their respective work places.
Drivers competed in the following categories of; Bus driving, Rigid Truck, Novice, Rigid with Trailer, Artic and LDV 3, 5. Amongst those who competed were Bus drivers from Great North Transport, Bojanala Bus Services, Thaba Trans, Department of Roads and Transport, Anglo Platinum mine, Thabazimbi Local Municipality and Kumba Iron Ore.
The Mayor, mr Naledi Matlou, congratulated all participants and further encouraged them to do more in assisting all other drivers who did no take part to improve their driving skills as it was the order of the day. A special thank you was also given to Kumba Iron Ore and Great North Transport for sponsoring the occasion as well as the Department of Roads and Transport.
There were several winners in all categories and the overall winner who collected the highest points was Mr SW Baloyi from Great North Transport with 1426 points. All participants were given medals as token of appreciation and winners in all categories including runner ups received trophies.
