Environmental Day
THABAZIMBI – Environmental day was held on June 8, 2010 and the school children of Deo-Gloria and Ysterberg Primary met at the Regorogile Sports Ground together with Kumba Iron Ore and Thabazimbi Municipality in unity to clean up Thabazimbi. The theme of the day was “ZERO Waste” and the campaign aimed to teach children about recycling and protecting the environment.
The school kids were given different colour t-shirts and caps according to the type of waste they were supposed to pick-up. The pupils with blue had to pick up any bottles, orange had to pick up papers, green any plastic and red any steel objects. The kids were divided into different areas of the Municipality to pick up waste that would later be recycled. This was done with a lot of enthusiasm in the aim of keeping the town clean and to learn about the importance of recycling. There were also prizes to be won for the team that picked up the most waste in their allocated areas.
The kids met back at the sports ground with the waste they picked up and separated it into the different waste recycling categories. After the excitement of picking up waste, the school kids were addressed by the General Manager of Kumba, Emmy Leeka and the Mayor of Thabazimbi Municipaliy, Naledi Matlou, who encouraged them to recycle and continue keeping Thabazimbi clean. The message of ZERO Waste was emphasised in the Mayor and the General Manager’s encouraging chat to the kids.
