THABAZIMBI – With only five days left before the FIFA 2010 World Cup kick start on the 5th of June 2010, Kumba Iron Ore football club made it a point that they rise up to the occasion to lift the Spar Cup 2010. Scoring an important goal in the first half and making sure that they don’t concede any against the defending champions, Pick n Pay Football Club in the Final was all that they needed to be the Champions of the Spar cup 2010.
Pick n Pay played well in the Semi Finals when they beat Transnet Football Club by two goals to one and proceeding to the finals the very same day.
Kumba had to go for penalty shootouts to overcome Thabazimbi Municipality Football Club in the Semi Final clash at the same date and venue. An exciting 70 minutes saw neither team able to break the deadlock and a shoot out was needed to find a winner. With the teams still dead locked at the end of 70 minutes the game headed straight to penalty shootout and Kumba won by three goals to two.
Pick n Pay had to settle for the Silver medals and cash prize of R500 whilst Kumba walked away with the Trophy, Gold medals and R1000 cash prize.
Mr Frans Ras and Mr Anton Vorster, managers from Shoprite congratulated the teams that made to the finals. The Chairperson of the Spar Football League, Mr Ofentse Ngwako, the Deputy Chair, Mr Fire Molemane and the Secretary, Mr Duncan Nyirenda, also echoed the same sentiments. They also extended the words appreciation to the Sponsor, Thaba Super Spar, for the continuous support and also Bearings International for contributing to the prizes.
All thirteen Spar Football teams participated in this tournament.
