Ms Desiree van der Walt, Mp leader of the Democratic Alliance, Limpopo Province reported on an incident she witnessed last week Wednesday in Polokwane involving the bullying of other road users by the “blue lights brigade” which demonstrates once again how the Police Service’s VIP Protection Unit has become a law unto itself. “The function of the police is to protect the people, not to escort MP’s who have bloated egos”, she said.
She said that this happened when they were escorting the Parliamentary Oversight Committee. During the trip to the venue they rudely pushed other road users off the road. She personally witnessed how they were travelling at high speed in Thabo Mbeki Street, Polokwane, with seven SAPS blue lights vehicles around 19:00 whilst escorting the mini busses of Mp’s.
“Last year we welcomed reports that the South African Police Service (SAPS) had issued a directive that clarifies regulations governing the use of emergency lights on vehicles operated by the VIP Protection Unit. The move was essential but we cautioned that those regulations must be actually enforced, and that a tough new code of conduct is brought in to ensure that officers are held to the highest standards.”
“The Premier Mr Cassel Mathale must explain to us what steps he is going to take to ensure that highest policing standards are upheld in Limpopo.”
