THABAZIMBI – Kumba Iron Ore together with the Thabazimbi Municipality and Butterfield franchisor officially opened the Butterfield franchise at Ipelegeng. Previously in Thabazimbi there were no bakeries other than the in-store bakeries at the local supermarkets. Thabazimbi Mine realised the gap in the market and exploited the opportunity of acquiring a bakery for the community. Butterfield franchise was chosen in particular because of their empowerment credentials which focus on establishing bakeries in predominantly disadvantaged communities.
Butterfield bakery is one of the local economic development projects in Thabazimbi Mine’s Social and Labour Plan and Thabazimbi Municipality Integrated Development Plan to empower the community of Thabazimbi. Kumba funded the project with the sum of R1.5 million to set up the bakery. The bakery is owned by eight beneficiaries which three of the beneficiaries are females and five males. All the beneficiaries are HDSA’s and they each own shared in the bakery. This will ensure the beneficiaries to take ownership of the bakery and ensure that the bakery is sustainable in the future. Mrs Mosito, from Thabazimbi Local Municipality, said in her speech has built the community a legacy that will be carried from generation to generation and thanked Kumba on behalf of the community for the remarkable work that they are doing.
