THABAZIMBI – Thabazimbi Local Municipality had to go for penalty shootouts to overcome Agananag Local Municipality in the Final of Limpopo Provincial SAMSRA games 2010 soccer clash at Thaba-Park stadium in Thabazimbi on Saturday afternoon on the 8th of May 2010 and become the champions four times in a row. An exciting 40 minutes saw neither team able to break the deadlock and a shoot out was needed to find a winner. The Thabazimbi team shaded the play in the opening exchange and looked the more likely to find the breakthrough, but in the 15th minute they nearly found themselves conceding goal in bizarre circumstances. With the teams still dead locked at the end of 40 minutes the game headed straight to penalty shootout. All the sports fields of Thabazimbi were extremely busy with all sporting activities on the day.
Athletes competed in the following sporting codes ranging from fishing, pool, volley ball, netball, golf, table tennis and soccer. The venues that were used were Thaba-Park, Ipelegeng, Regorogile, Meriting sport grounds, Jood se dam and Rooiberg golf course. Thabazimbi municipality was also crowned winners in pool for the second time, volleyball in their first appearance in these games and came second in netball. A total number of 16 municipalities participated in these competitions. At the award giving ceremony the President of Southern African Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA), Mr. David Sono congratulated all the municipalities who took part. The Mayor, Naledi Lucas Matlou of Thabazimbi echoed the same sentiments. “I’m delighted and proud as the tournament went very peaceful with no incident” said Mayor Matlou. He further thanked the local organising committee for arranging such a good event without any problem.
