Thabazimbi – Waterberg District Department of Roads and Transport held a very successful District Driver of the Year (DOTY) Competition on Saturday, 13 June 2009 at Thaba Trans.
Sixty two (62) drivers participated in the event. Drivers could enter any of the following five categories: bus driving, mini bus (Ivecos), rigid truck driving, truck driving with trailer or long truck driving. Women also participated in the competition.
The overall winner of the competition was Mr MI Naampa of Bojanala Bus Services. The winners and runners-up in each category will proceed to the Provincial Competitions to be held soon.
Sponsors who took part were Kumba Iron Ore Mine, Amandelbult Mine, Great North Transport, Thabazimbi Local Municipality and Thaba Trans.
All sponsors were thanked for making the day a huge success by not only sponsoring, but also allowing their drivers to participate in the event.
In her welcome address, Cllr PA Mosito said that all drivers are important and that they must showcase their driving skills instead of just competing against each other. She also made an appeal to the department of Roads and Transport to also include in their safety tips the “don’t drive and use cell phone and don’t drink and eat” as some accidents are caused by those two factors.
