Two nominations short listed for Anglo Chief Executive Safety Awards
THABAZIMBI – Two Kumba nominations have been short listed for the Anglo American Chief Executive Safety Awards 2008/9. Thabazimbi mine is in the running for the prestigious Anglo Most Improved Operation Award; and the High Energy Fuel plant team at Sishen mine is being considered for an Anglo Employee Safety Award. The winners will be announced at the Anglo American CEO Dinner on 20 May at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Congratulating the short listed nominees, Philip Baum, Chief Executive, Anglo Ferrous Metals and Industries, said that they demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving safety and achieving Zero Harm. The judges were impressed by Thabazimbi mine’s safety performance, particularly the Lost Time Injury (LTI) free achievement in 2008, and the strong sense of ownership and leadership of safety at every level, he said. “What particularly stood out was the people centred approach taken to every thing form hazard identification to learning from incidents.” He said that the Sishen High Energy Fuel plant team’s safety record was particularly impressive given the high risk nature of the activities undertaken. The judges were also impressed by the visible felt leadership in the team. To reinforce the drive towards Zero Harm, the judges have also decided that sites that gave achieved no Lost Time Injuries or loss of live in 2008, will be receiving a special Zero Harm certificate.
