Township Rollers champions of Inaugural Mayoral Final
THABAZIMBI – The Township Rollers beat Colchester Football Club on Saturday 29 November to become the first team to win the Inaugural Mayoral Cup.
Over and above their victory the Rollers received a cheque of R3 000 and a floating trophy.
The Township Rollers breezed their way into the final by beating Cameroon in the semi’s. The other team in the final, Colchester, had a harder time of it and only eliminated Ysterberg during a penalty shoot out after the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Eight Local Football Association teams participated in the tournament. The day of the final match also offered entertainment in the form of masters players from old and well known soccer teams of Ysterberg and Seven Stars competing.
Beside the dramatics on the field, there were some minor ugly incidents by some unruly fans. Police were called to come and calm the situation.
The Thabazimbi town council has initiated the Inaugural Mayoral Cup to strengthen the soccer fraternity and to rally the community members to support their local clubs. According to the municipality it is also an effort to showcase its readiness as part of South Africa hosting the Confederation Cup in June 2009 and FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010.
