Car down bridge over Crocodile
KOEDOESKOP – Two people were killed on Saturday 14 June at approximately 19:00 when the car they were in went through the rails of a bridge and fell into the Crocodile river.
A Ford Courier bakkie was crossing the single vehicle bridge, between the post office in Koedoeskop and Laerskool Koedoeskop, when the driver apparently lost control over the vehicle after which it went through the rails and fell into the river. The bridge is at least 10m high.
The Thabazimbi police did not want the names of deceased released. They are both males, 67 and 36 years old respectively. One hailed from Bela-Bela and the other from Shongoane Village.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered by the paramedic on duty, Henk Havenga, of Thabazimbi Crisis Control. After assessing the scene of the accident he retrieved his diving gear. The bodies were recovered by midnight.
According to Havenga the murky water and time of day rendered visibility very poor which made the recovery of the bodies a slow process. It was also very cold, between 9 and 10 ºC.
The vehicle was recovered from the river on Sunday by a towing company from Modimolle.
A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Thabazimbi police.
