Survivor pony camp

THABAZIMBI – Thabazimbi’s  annual pony camp took place at the farm Kwaggasvlakte in early December last year. The theme was “survivor” and although nobody was voted off the farm, an ultimate survivor was appointed. She was Gillian Trollope who rode a number of horses to perfection. She also won the individual Barrel Race and Rope challenge.
But most of the survivor challenges took place in teams, of which there were four, with three members in each team. The first challenge was to come up with a name for the respective teams and to create a mascot to go with it. This challenge was won by the Italian Stallions. This team also won the Gymkana Games challenge, a fun and laughter event, which can also be called boeresport on horseback. The Flying Changes team won the scavenger hunt and the Lightning Power team won the shelter building challenge.
The Individual Polo Cross challenge was won by Elin Groenewald, the youngest member of the Lightning Power team. The winning horse was Troy, who was ridden by various riders. He also withstood different types of weather without a shelter.
The pony camp was organized by Monica Willats, who is a horse riding instructor in Thabazimbi. The pony camp not only involved challenges, but the riders also learnt about preparing for horse shows, to be on the look-out for symptoms that indicated horse ailments and how to care for their horses.
