Safety tips in assisting with the prevention of property related crimes
During the previous months Thabazimbi residents experienced theft of motor vehicles, house breaking & theft and house robbery. Keeping in mind that the festive season is around the corner we urge the community to be alert and aware of their surroundings at all times. Domestic workers are mostly at home during the day times and not the owners. These employees are often aware of the occupants schedule and they are most often your eyes and ears when you are not at home. When employing a domestic worker, the SAPD suggest the following: The employer has a certified copy of the employees identity document; Contact details of the employee and next of kin; If possible, confirm the domestic workers address (when not residing on the same premises/address when on leave); Register the employee at the Department of Labour (more information can be obtained from www.labour.gov.za) Treat all your employees equally, with dignity and respect. Ensure that your employees are paid punctually and according to prescribed regulations (as indicated above). Here are a few tips in assisting with the prevention of house breaking/house robbery: These safety tips might not prevent a break-in or robbery, but can assist with making it more difficult to carry out. Main doors should be fitted with strong locks. Reinforce doors with iron grill gates protected by a metal clasp and a strong closed shackle padlock. Install additional safety features to all openings and fasten them with a good quality lock. Install a burglar alarm to detect unlawful intrusion. Establish proper lighting to ensure visibility in the area surrounding the residence. When leaving on a vacation, cancel all newspaper and magazine deliveries. Ask neighbours to keep an eye on the premises. Always insist on seeing identification cards of callers who claim to be government officials. Never open the door to strangers. Keep cash and valuables in banks or safe-deposit boxes. Alert your family members if you are sending someone unknown to their house. Keep your eyes open at all times. Know all emergency numbers by heart. Remove keys from all vehicles, lock the doors and close the windows, when not in use. Report any suspicious character or vehicles to the police with specific details. Persons: clothing description, features, build, etc. Vehicles: registration number, vehicle description (if possible make, model and colour), number of occupants, etc. Thabazimbi Police can assure it’s community, we are doing our utmost best to succeed in our goals and know that working together, can make a difference.
