“Harley on Safari”

SUN CITY – The Pretoria Chapter of HOG (Harley Owners Group) hosted the International “Harley on Safari” Rally to Sun City during the long weekend, 18 – 21 March.
The event was a resounding success with many overseas riders joining in a great sunny rally. Apart from the locals from all over South Africa, there were riders who came over from England, Germany, Switzerland, America, Gernsey Islands, Holland and France.
The rally started off with a mass ride including celebrities from Rivonia in Johannesburg. They were escorted by Johannesburg Metro Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulances to Menlo Park where they joined up with the Pretoria Chapter. Tony Anderson and Wiela Botha from Thabazimbi played a major Marshalling role to ensure orderly disciplined riding to Sun City. Again the Metro police and Tshwane Fire Brigade led the pack from Pretoria to Sun City. There were over 500 Harley Davidson motorcycles on the ride, which is one of the biggest ever mass rides of Harley Davidson in South Africa. The event was filmed by MTV, Supersport, SABC2 Morning Live and SABC1 News.
The whole pack was about 15 to 20 km long and all arrived safely at Sun City with no incidents. The Friday night entertainment was by P J Powers at the Kingdom Hall. Saturday was a stunning Beach Party at the Valley of the Waves with the six person, all female band SHE entertain the rally. On Sunday a Beer Festival was held at the Grand Ball Room with the rock band “Schnapper” entertaining the crowds.
Two mass outrides were held. On Saturday 50 riders rode to Squires at Hartbeespoort Dam, and on Sunday 70 bikes rode to Dros in Rustenburg.
The entire rally was incident free and the only injury attended to by the paramedics over the whole rally was to a person who fell off his balcony ! !
