Safety Road Show at Amandelbult

Elias Malindi

AMANDELBULT – Amandelbult held a Safety Road Show, Imbizo, at Mlanje Stadium on Friday 20 May. The aim behind this Safety Road Show was to get Amandelbult management and Unions (association leadership) to talk with one voice with the employees about safety at the workplace. The management wished to produce a quality platinum that is without any stain of blood.
Their comedy icons were present at the event. This was Jerry “Mofokeng” Phele and Aaron “Chirwali” Nkosi who are well known from the SABC 1 sitcom called “Emzini Wezintsizwa”. They produced a powerful play that had two themes: “Think what you can do by living, that you cannot do dying” and “Make everyday count – life is a gift”.
Representatives from the Anglo Platinum was Mr Mike Rogers (Anglo Platinum Executive Manager) and Mr Thabisile Phumo (Anglo Platinum Editor of “Our voice” magazine), while Amandelbult was represented by Mr Francois Uys (Amandelbult Mine Manager), Mr Eric Nkosi (Human Resource Manager) and Mr Felix Manyanga (Amandelbult Production Manager).
The NUM branch secretary, Mr Sello Mothibedi said: “People need to be responsible at work, because we need to warn everybody about safety. You should not turn a blind eye to safety issues at the workplaces and even out of work because there is an Aids pandemic which we should always avoid”.
Mr Francois Uys mentioned in his speech that employees should adhere to safety at all times – at work and outside of work. He said last year Amandelbult has lost 120 workers due to the Aids epidemic. Workers must all support safety programmes.
The unions have signed safety agreements. These safety agreements are empowering the employees to be able to say “no” to working at unsafe workplaces. Around 3000 people attended the Road Show. The Tripple T Brass Band, together with the Amandelbult Choir entertained everybody with their music while drinks and braai were served after the event.
