Beide is in hul bed twee keer deur ‘n Mosambiekse spoegkobra gepik. Beide was binne ‘n halfuur by die hospitaal gewees.

LiN Media/Noordelike Nuus

Loose what counts at Madame et Monsieur

THABAZIMBI-Estie van der Westhuizen is the proud owner of the 15th branch of Madame et Monsieur in South Africa.  This branch had its grand opening on 14 October 2011.  It is located at shop 9, Medicum Building, Watsonia Street, Thabazimbi.  Christmas/New Year specials are available until 31 January 2012 on the “Electro Slim Technology” as well as on a full set acrylic tips.  Madame et Monsieur also offers a unique treatment called “The Universal Contour Body Wrap.  With this wrap you will get a guaranteed centimeter loss of at least 16 centimeters in 1 treatment.  This treatment also takes about 50% cellulite away.  With the electro slim program you can loose up to 10kg in 4 weeks.  Electro Slim is an exclusive copyrighted custom software program created by Madame et Monsieur that specializes in area-specific body sculpting through the use of skin contact electrodes.  The electrodes deliver waves of pulses with a repetitive variable pulse frequency to specific targeted areas to sculpt and reshape the body.  These pulse waves produce rhytmic and powerful muscle contraction that result in both muscle rehabilitation and rapid fat reduction.  The personalized nutritional program coupled with the passive exercise of particular muscle groups breaks down adipose tissue while simultaneously increasing blood circulation, resulting localized tissue reduction, improved health and longevity.  The recommended treatment is 30 minute sessions 4 times a week.  Electro body sculpting is a doctor recommended therapy (FDA approved equipment) with no side effects, only total health benefits.  It finally eliminates those “hard to reduce trouble spots” and create the body you always wanted with the Electro Slim program by Madame et Monsieur.  The “Universal Contour Wrap” gives you a guaranteed centimeter loss, although there is no weight loss.  It works by osmosis which is the passage of fluids through a membrane or other porous substance.  Osmosis occurs when the sea clay solution draws out the impurities through the pores.  The pressure of the contour wrap and the solution also stimulate the latent toxins in the adipose tissue and they are flushed out through the lymphatic system.  A centimeter loss is achieved through the compacting of the soft tissue and skin tightening.  The treatment takes 2 hours and gives a guaranteed centimeter loss of 16 centimeters with a money back guarantee.  Call Estie at 079 372 1486 or Charlotte on 082 653 4008.  Business hours are Mondays to Fridays from 07:00 till 19:00.  On Saturdays from 07:00 to 13:00.  They will close on 23 December 2011 and open on 3 January 2012.

A dangerous combination: alcohol and energy drinks

The Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA) says the growing practice of downing energy drinks as mixers with alcohol should be avoided at all costs.

Says Berna Harmse, Registered Dietitian and President of ADSA, “Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can prolong the drinking session by keeping the person awake longer. This can result in a greater intake of alcohol and an increased chance of serious damage from alcohol.”

Drinkers may think that caffeine counteracts the adverse effects of alcohol, but it does not.

“Says Harmse, “People who combine energy drinks with alcohol underestimate their true level of drunkenness – a state of mind that can be labelled ‘being a wide-awake drunk.’ They think that they are sober, but they are not.”

Harmse says they may then tend to binge drink which may make them vulnerable to sexual assault or driving while intoxicated. Scientists have also blasted myths that energy drinks containing high quantities of caffeine combat alcohol impairment, confirming instead that the caffeine only reduces alcohol induced drowsiness, but not the actual impairment.

Says Harmse, “The trouble is this: energy drinks are an upper. They increase your heart rate and make you ready to spring into action. Conversely, alcohol is a depressant, or a downer. Thus, when you combine the two it can have seriously adverse effects on your heart and body.”

Overconsumption of alcohol is a risk to health and to society. Practices that help drinkers to drink more have potential to increase this risk. The practice of combining alcohol and energy drinks should therefore never be condoned or supported.

Litchi, lychee, leechi, laichi, lichu, lizhi…

Pronunciation optional, taste optimal

The mercury’s rising which can only mean one thing – summer’s here, bringing with it the first subtropical fruits of the new season. And in sunny South Africa that includes the first harvest of our heavenly home grown litchis.

With a number different cultivars produced here, namely Third Month Red, Mauritius, Fay Zee Siu, Wai Chee and McLean’s Red,  our litchi season spans  most of summer, from late October right through to early March, peaking between November and January. Nothing quite says summer like litchis, with their rosy red skins and delicately fragranced flesh that oozes juicy sweetness.

A fuss-free ingredient for both sweet and savoury dishes, litchis are great in starters like cool lettuce and litchi soup, and mains like litchi and crab salad with a sweet chilli sauce and duck with litchi in a red Thai curry.

Of course dessert is where litchis really shine, adding a subtle sweetness and perfume to parfaits, ice-creams, cheesecake, sorbets and tarts. That’s not to mention refreshing drinks like litchi and ginger ice tea or litchi and mint cooler – all perfect poolside accompaniments.

They’re also ideal for the whole family. Anyone watching their waistlines will be happy to know litchis are the ultimate guilt-free indulgence as they’re naturally fat-free. Plus 100g of raw, peeled litchis are a source of vitamin C* making them a nutritious treat for young and old.

*raw, peeled litchis per 100g provide 25% Nutrient Reference Values (NRV) of vitamin C for individuals 4 years and older, expressed per single serving.

50-MangoDouble

Marvelously moreish mangoes!

Mangoes are considered one of the world’s most decadent fruits, and South Africa is fortunate to have an abundant supply of this subtropical fruit from the peak of summer in December to the start of autumn in April.

With skins ranging from sunny yellow and fresh, crisp green to fiery red and a delectable, juicy orange fresh that bursts with sweet flavour, it’s hardly surprising that the exotic mango is known as the king of fruits.

An apt name given that mangoes are one of the oldest cultivated fruits in the world, their history spanning back some 6000 years. The fruit is believed to have originated in north eastern India – where it’s regarded as a sacred fruit – and north western Myanmar and Bangladesh. Buddhist monks were recorded as taking mango plants on voyages to eastern Asia as early as the 4th century, from where it spread across Asia. Persian traders were largely responsible for taking the fruit to the Middle East and Africa.

Mangoes have been cultivated in South Africa for the past 100 years, with in excess of 75 000 tons being harvested annually today. Interestingly, of this amount, South Africans consume 20 000 tons of fresh fruit; 20 000 tons of juice; 15 000 tons of atchar and 10 000 tons of dried fruit!

It’s clear we just can’t get enough of our luscious local mangoes! So make sure you stock up and get your share this season.

The great thing about summer is that if you’re looking for light, healthy foods to prepare for you and your family, South Africa’s bounty of seasonal fruit provides an endless source of inspiration.

Mangoes are rich in vitamin C; just half a mango provides 47% of the Nutrient Reference Values (NRV) for vitamin C. They’re also a source of folic acid and beta carotene. Vitamin C and beta carotene are antioxidants that together help protect our cells against free radical damage.

With the excesses of the festive season clocking up the calories during summer, it’s good to know that mangoes won’t add to your waistline woes. Half a mango provides just 450 kilojoules and is virtually fat free.

Sweet, juicy mangoes are available from December until April, making this succulent exotic fruit the perfect ingredient for summertime family meals. Why not try grilled mango cheeks with cinnamon French toast for breakfast; add a mango and chicken Waldorf salad to your lunch table; or enjoy a coffee break with a slice of upside down caramelised mango cake.

Upside down caramelised mango cake

Ingredients:

Caramel

175g castor sugar

2 mangoes, chopped (out of season, substitute with canned mango, drained)

Cake:

150g cake flour

2 teaspoon baking powder

175g butter, softened

175g castor sugar

4 tablespoons ground almonds

4 eggs, beaten

5ml vanilla essence

Garnish:

1 mango and passion fruit

Preparation:

Grease and flour a Bundt cake tin and line the base with baking powder. Alternatively a greased silicone cake mould works very well.

To make the caramel, place the sugar in a heavy-based saucepan, do not stir, allow to caramelise over medium heat very gently until deep golden brown. Pour immediately into the prepared tin.

Arrange the diced mango over the caramel. The fruit must almost cover the base of the tin.

Sift the flour and baking powder and place in a food processor.

Add the butter, sugar, almonds, eggs and vanilla. Process briefly until smooth and evenly blended, 1-2 minutes.

Spread the cake mixture over the fruit.

Bake at 160ºC until the top is golden and the sides of the cake have pulled away from the tin, about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Transfer to a cooling rack and leave to cool for a few minutes, before unmoulding.

Serving suggestion – dust with icing sugar and serve warm or at room temperature with crème fraiche
