NORTHAM – People around the world have celebrated “Mandela Day” for the first time since the iconic South African leader’s death by doing good deeds on what would have been his 96th birthday.
For the past five years millions have volunteered 67 minutes of their time on July 18 for the common good to mark Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of activism for South Africa’s freedom.
For the first Mandela Day after his death, events were planned on Friday, 18 July 2104 in Northam, Smashblock, Phatsima, Dwaalboom and Regorogile. During events cleaning campaigns, distributions of goodie bags, portable solar devices and food parcels to day care centres and Thabang Children’s project were carried out.
Also on Mandela day Anglo-American Platinum Union mine handed over a brand new Refuse removal truck and 920 wheelie bins to Thabazimbi Local Municipality. “It is with great pleasure to be part of this August occasion of the official handover of the wheelie bins and brand new Refuse Compactor truck for Business and Domestic Waste Collection” said Mayor Patricia Mosito during her acceptance speech for truck handover. “It is a great honour for me to stand in front of you today to share a common purpose of celebrating the day of the Legendary Icon and to walk on his foot paths that led to the democratic dispensation of our country.
”This project is to us a very important exercise that demonstrates our drive to ‘zero waste to landfill’, where by every individual should realise the importance of a clean environment and its contribution to our health and livelihood. It is our sincere wish to have our town and townships clean as articulated by President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation Address, hence the initiation of the process during this important and respectable International Mandela Day.” said Mr PA Schoeman, General Manager of Anglo American Platinum Union mine during the handover ceremony.
“The project came as a result of the Thabazimbi Local Municipality requesting Anglo American Platinum’s intervention on the shortage of resources. The Municipality had challenges in meeting waste removal needs of the entire townships and towns that it serves. Further, the Municipality requested Anglo American Platinum to extend its hand to assist the indigents around the RDP houses of Northam who cannot afford the payments of the wheelie bins for domestic wastes which will keep hygiene and also allow the waste removal process to run smooth. Anglo American Platinum took the request into consideration and purchased both the Waste removal Truck and the Wheelie bins” he added.
