THABAZIMBI – A farrier hailing from Thabazimbi, Pieter van Staden, recently came third in the South African Farrier and Blacksmith Championships which took place in Gauteng.
Pieter is based in Benoni where he works for Alex Johnson, a well known senior farrier. He also does work for himself at the stables in Golden Gate National Park, Koster and Thabazimbi.
Pieter participated in the Platting Division where each participant had to trim and shoe two feet of a horse within 20 minutes. The best three participants in each heat went through to the finals during which the process was repeated.
The allover winner was Dave Hyslop from Gauteng and Alex Johnson was second. This was the first year that Pieter participated in the Platting Division. His achievement is even more remarkable since he competed against senior farriers. He started working as a farrier only two years ago.
The entrants were judged by two international judges, Chris and Cody Gregory from England, as well as a judge from South Africa, Johan van der Merwe.
